I ran some cat5 from the living room to the office this weekend. It was a good opportunity to get acquainted with my attic and to learn a little about the construction of our house. I took a few photos to share with my contractor.
This series is taken from the access hole in the hallway. The photos start at North and rotate clockwise.

The angular black PVC pipe vents the range hood. To the right of it is an iron plumbing vent which probably connects near the toilet.
The third photo facing east shows the original roof and the access hole which has been cut through it. Through the hole, you can see the vent fan hookup.
The last photo facing northwest shows the construction for a small roof expansion.
Some odd support structures are visible further north. This may somehow relate to the support post in the living room.

Here is another series of photos through the access hole between roofs, moving from North to South.

The insulation seems to be a mix of blown and fiberglass. Unlike the older side of the house, this newer area does nothing to hide the cable spaghetti.
Here is a shot looking West along the old roof line. You can see a small vent near the top.

Some of the beams here have dirt on them. I wonder where that came from.
